A hands-on 5-day workshop led by Jean-Guy Lecat, focusing on the exploration of space in theatrical performances. Participants will engage in practical exercises, improvisations, and discussions to deepen their understanding of spatial dynamics and its impact on performance. They will also explore the principles of set design, spatial storytelling, and the integration of architecture into theatrical productions through practical demonstrations and collaborative exercises. This platform allows participants to experiment with spatial constraints and innovative staging techniques under Lecat’s guidance.
-Applications are open for directors, scenographers, designers, architects, lighting designers, sound designers, and theatre makers who have a keen interest in exploring the role of space in theatrical performances.
-A desire to experiment with innovative staging techniques and spatial constraints is important.
-Prior experience in theatre and performing arts is preferred, but not mandatory.
-Participants should be willing to engage in collaborative exercises, discussions, and practical demonstrations.
About Jean Guy-Lecat
Jean-Guy Lecat is a French scenographer and a prominent figure in the world of theatre and stage design, renowned for his multifaceted contributions as a theatre architect, scenographer, technical director, and space designer. His career spans over four decades, during which he notably served as the scenographer for Peter Brook at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord for more than twenty-five years. Lecat’s collaboration with Brook played a significant role in shaping the visual and spatial aspects of Brook’s productions.
Lecat’s 40-plus years of experience in transforming dilapidated warehouses, abandoned factories, and monasteries into viable performance spaces, coupled with his immense knowledge in scenography, design history, acoustics, and actor-audience relationship, position him as a world leader in theatre and design.

- Workshop Capacity: 20
- Applicants must be 18+
- Selection will be done by Sankar Venkateswaran and Quasar Thakore Padamsee (Theatre curators, SAF 2024). Selected candidates shall be informed via email.
- Participants will be required to take care of their travel, food, and accommodation.
- Results will be announced by 21 October 2024.
FAQs
Q1. I am not an Indian national, am I eligible to apply?
A1. Yes, you may apply. Applicant would need to cover their own travel to and from Goa, accommodation and local travel in Goa for the duration of the workshop.
Q2. I will turn 18 on the last day of the workshop, am I eligible to apply?
A2. No, you are not. You need to be 18 years or above at the time of application.
Q3. Can I attend the sessions that interest me the most only?
A3. No. All participants are expected to attend every session for the entire duration of the workshop.
Q4. Am I eligible to get a certificate if I don’t submit the required outcome of the workshop?
A4. No. You shall not be given a certificate if you do not submit/participate in the workshop outcome.
Q5. What is the fee of the workshop?
A5. It is a free workshop for all 20 participants. Participants would need to cover their own travel and accommodation.
Q6. Can SAF pay for my travel and accommodation?
A6. No. Applicants once selected can seek sponsorship for their travel and accommodation.
Q7. Can SAF give me a letter of selection for me to get sponsorship for my travel and accommodation?
A7. Yes.
Q8. By when do I need to confirm my participation after the announcement of results?
A8. You need to confirm your participation within 10 days after the announcement of the results. If we do not get a confirmation within the given duration, the seat will go to the applicant next in the waiting list.
Q9. Is the decision of the curators final?
A9. Yes.
