Serendipity Out and About

Serendipity Out and About aims at fostering connections with the local Goan community outside of Panjim. The project takes performances, workshops, conversations, and other forms of engagement from around the country to the local residents of Goa for an intimate experience and for creating a relationship with the community beyond the festival. The venues include old Goan homes, community centres across Goa, government schools, old age homes, and orphanages to take a part of the festival experience to all of Goa.

PHASE 2

Jhund
Jhund, a dark comedy, unfolds in an unknown room where two strangers navigate their uncertain circumstances. Unsure if they’re there by choice or coercion, they grapple with fear, defending themselves against an indefinable threat. Amid absurd moments, an unknown authority keeps asking for things, making them question who to trust and what they believe. This comedy delves into themes of submission, freedom, and betrayal, revealing the fine line
between compliance and rebellion in a gripping, compact narrative.

Sakal Jaani He Naath
Sakal Jaani He Naath is a folk musical adapted from Vasant Deo’s Sudama ke Chawal. It revisits the famed mythological fable about Lord Krishna and his childhood friend Sudama. A tragic-comedy story that explores the narrative of the contemporary human situation and a satire on today’s man, his double standards and polluted mind. While the story and characters are same, the ethos of these characters is what is seen in today’s common life. The age-old tale and its characters have been used only as reference. The play runs parallel with Narottam Das’s Sudamacharit and their verses sung in folk tunes of Doha and Behre Tavil.

Gubu Gubu
Saheb, who works in a bank in the city, has some vacant land in the village. With help from the villagers, Saheb gives his farm to Pandu, a poor farmer in need of work. Pandu is a hardworking and honest man. After the first harvest, Saheb is overcome by greed and tries to grab all the harvest. The humour in the plot is shown by Saheb thinking that the simple villager is a fool and won’t see through his tricks. But the farmer uses his knowledge about crops and surprises everyone with his cleverness.

Devised from the ‘Nandiwala’ folk style of storytelling found in Maharashtra and Karnataka, this performance also makes an attempt to have a conversation about how the food we eat is grown and how it reaches our plates. The story uses a traditional style of verse to describe each crop and engage with the audience. The performance features a decorated Nandi dancing, as well as his and Nandiwala’s banter, their relationship and all the fun through the performance of “Gubu Gubu”.
