It is a matter of some serendipity that you find yourself face to face, or within earshot, of our invitation to, and offering of, silence.

Silence is like a bottomless ocean that absorbs all noise and still has lots of space and time leftover for any sound that the universe may still want to make. We are inviting you to touch that ocean’s shoreline, to step into its substance.

We want to share some time, before, after and between the intervals of noise and speech. We invite you to be in silence, with us, for a while.

Is silence the precondition, the foundation or the aspiration of sound? From the moment we are conceived till our last breaths we are figured in sound on a noisy planet. Our heartbeats, our breaths, the circulation of blood in our veins and the incessant chatter of our waking and dreaming minds come to us as traces, echoes and metaphors of sound. All sound has a beginning and an end, a surge and a fade. Silence is what stays, and comes before the beginning and the end.

Silence can mean submission, but it can also mean power. It can be a sign of wonder or incomprehension. It can hang in the air like a question, freeze like a glacier of anger, or be a source of comfort and refuge. It can be warm or cold, transparent or opaque. It can be in anticipation or in retrospect, it can be assent and dissent, respectful or sullen, it can be the quiet of sleep or the stretch of awakening. It can stir as life or be still as life’s end. 

We, Raqs, invite you to contribute to our silent corridor at Serendipity, with your presence. Leave a trace, or traces, they could be instructions for the observation, absorption and experience of silence, they could be a sound that sharpens the perception of silence, they can be words, drawings, signs, gifs or memes. They can be an object or a texture, a text or a thought. All contributions that are selected will be properly credited.

Come, break the silence, enter the silence, be the silence.
