Arts Journalism Grant

About

The SAF Arts Journalism Grant seeks to provide support worth 1 lakh to an early- or mid-career journalist/reporter in an effort to develop a body of reportage around creative communities/ practices in the subcontinent. Situated as we are within an ecosystem that is more saturated with initiatives for critical and curatorial writing, this Grant hopes to address a seeming lacuna in opportunities for accessible arts journalism, to drive greater interest and public stakeholdership in the arts. The awardee will be chosen from a pool of candidates nominated by the Jury.

Jury

Arundhati is a researcher and writer interested in image studies, popular visual cultures and documentary as a method across mediums. They currently edit and manage Alternative South Asia Photography and Art (ASAP | art), a platform dedicated to critical writing and conversations around lens based practices from South Asia. With graduate training in visual, film and performance studies, Arundhati recently finished their MA and MPhil from the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Supriya Nair is a writer and editor from Mumbai. She is head, research and media, at the Godrej DEI Lab, and co-founder of the media start-up All Things Small. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Foreign Policy, and Wisden.

Ruby Hembrom is an Adivasi cultural documentarian and practitioner based in Kolkata. She is the founder of adivaani (first voices), an archiving and publishing outfit of and by Adivasis (the indigenous peoples of India) started in July 2012 as a non-profit organization. She is the writer of adivaani’s Santal Creation Stories for children, a recast of the Santal Creation myths in English and the prize-winning Disaibon Hul, on the Santal Rebellion of 1855–57. Her documentation initiative grew out of a need to claim Adivasi stake in historical and contemporary social, cultural, and literary spaces and as peoples.

Elizabeth Kuruvilla is Publishing Director, Simon & Schuster, India. She was previously Associate Publisher, Vintage at Penguin Random House India, and a journalist with national newspapers and magazines such as The Indian Express, Hindustan Times, Open, Mint and The Hindu. She was also Editor-in-Chief of Blouin Artinfo, an international art news publication.
