Serendipity at G20

These pillars have been handcrafted from handmade banana fibre paper and lantana. Banana plants have a short life cycle with each tree living only as long as it can produce fruit but regenerate with the new plants that sprout. Banana fibre is an agri-waste item found in abundance and lantana is an invasive weed threatening wildlife reserves in Central and South India that yields a tenacious material for use in eco-friendly craft forms. Gaia – Pillars of Light are the work of Jenny Pinto representing Oorja Designs LLP in collaboration with the indigenous artisans of Gudalur district, Tamil Nadu.
